Osteomyelitis bacteria and fungi

  • if the infection is in an area of bone above the insertion of a joint capsule, the infection can get into the joint capsule and this may lead to septic arthritis on top of osteomyelitis

  • on the other hand, if the joint space doesn’t overlap with the infection, periosteum itself reacts to infection

  • this new bone is termed involucrum, and fortunately we don’t see this happen very often

  • if the infection is limited to the area, abscess and local bone formation may result. dead bone may fall off, too; this is called sequestrum
