Summary Of Congenital Heart Disease

on 2.9.08 with 0 comments

  • congenital heart disease is an important cause of pediatric morbidity and mortality

  • diagnostic methods and surgical corrections have improved dramatically

    • this means longer survivals, often into reproductive ages

  • women with CHD are at a greater risk of giving birth to children with CHD

    • genetic causes are increasingly recognized

    • prenatal screening of pregnant women with CHD is mandatory

  • pulmonary hypertension/hypertensive arteriopathy develops in CHD with left-to-right shunts and this requires early intervention. posttricuspid shunts, where systemic pressure is applied to pulmonary microvasculature, will cause irreparable injury and become uncorrectable
